Building Engagement and Attainment for Minority Students (BEAMS) fostered data-driven campus change initiatives at more than 100 of the nation's four-year minority-serving institutions (MSIs)—Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities—in order to increase student engagement and learning. BEAMS was established to support the important role MSIs play in facilitating minority students’ participation in and completion of higher education.
The BEAMS project helped participating MSIs enhance their capacity to collect and use data for institutional decision making and accountability, creating a “culture of evidence” in which research and data help drive campus change. The data capacity building process and best practices adopted by BEAMS campuses can be replicated at other institutions.
