2009 Summer Academy: Cultivating Student Access & Success: Investing in First-Generation Student Achievement

The 2009 Summer Academy, Investing in First-Generation Student Achievement, targeted strategies and best practices to increase college access and success for first-generation students. As research shows, first-generation college students face a variety of risk factors that impede college access and success, including lower levels of academic preparation, lower levels of parental engagement in the college-going process, and less academic confidence. As a result, these students are less likely to participate in academic and social activities associated with success in college, such as studying in groups, participating in extracurricular activities, and using support services. These students are present on every campus and, with help, could make a great contribution. 

The Summer Academy addressed first-generation student issues through daily activities that helped institutional teams integrate best practices in student learning, use of data to develop cultures of evidence, and developing strategies to sustain campus change and build buy-in.
